Letters to Anna from Chicago where he enlisted, Cairo, Paducah and Columbus, Ky., Tennessee, Mississippi and the hospital. He discusses camp life and his work as cook, rations, accommodations for the soldiers, illness (his own and others), friends and family in Geneva and in the army, pursuit of Prices's army in Mississippi and frequently laments the poor treatment of the soldiers. He gives a vivid description of the hospital in Memphis and his work there. Seven letters, 1864-1865, to Anna from her brother William in Vicksburg, Nashville and New Orleans discuss his regiment's movements, news of the war, family and friends and one letter, March 1, 1865, describes the people wearing masks in the streets of New Orleans

The Esping family emigrated to Illinois from their home in D©œderhult, Sweden in 1853. The family line and genealogy is extensive, but this collection focuses mainly on Julius Esping, his wife Sophie Bezelius, and their direct line. Their sons, Julius and Axel, fought in the United States Civil War, and Axel was killed at the Battle of Vicksburg in 1863. The Esping family papers, 1869-1983 and undated, contains Otto William Esping's diary, family correspondence, accounts of the Espings' involvement in the Civil War, and genealogical data

Letters, diaries, and U.S. Army medical requisitions and reports, primarily by members of the Briggs and Mitchell families of Wisconsin and Illinois. Correspondence includes incoming letters to three Briggsville (Wis.) sisters: Abby (Mrs. Robert Mitchell), Lydia (Mrs. Darwin Atwood) and Emma R. Briggs, mainly from cousins, nephews and in-laws; letters to Dr. Robert Mitchell from his sisters Jane (Mrs. Reuben Stoyell) and Frances known as Fanny (Mrs. John Willson), and from Henry B. Munn, his attorney. Collection also includes diaries kept by Emma Briggs, 1863-1872; by Darwin Atwood, 1863-1865 as a private in the 1st Wisconsin Artillery; and by Dr. Robert Mitchell, 1861-1865 as surgeon of the 10th and 27th Wisconsin Infantry regiments, along with medical requisitions and reports produced by Mitchell during the Civil War
