The twelve-part panorama, photographed by Kung Tai and mounted in an accordion-style album, depicts the Shanghai Bund, the city's international financial and commercial center that runs along the west side of the Huangpu River. Taken from the east side of the river, the port's commercial activity is signalled by the large number of ships, both docked and mid-river, beyond which the buildings of the Bund lie. The spires of a western church in the International Settlement are visible beyond the steamship I-Chang in the third photograph. The final two photographs of the panorama include views of the buildings in the Pudong area of Shanghai on the eastern side of the river
