Providence Public Library
The Foster papers contain William E. Foster’s personal papers during his tenure as librarian at the Providence Public Library. Included are the manuscripts for the many speeches and addresses given to various clubs and organizations on historical and literary matters, subjects Foster was especially interested in. There are also handwritten and typed manuscripts for books and articles written by Foster and some of his writings published in booklet form.

Papers of Lewis A. McArthur (1883-1951) and his family, particularly papers relating to research on Oregon place names. McArthur was a historian who published Oregon Geographic Names in 1928. He published a second edition of the work in 1944, and had completed most of the work for the third edition before his death.

The Steven Fenberg Papers are comprised of books, correspondence, documents, and newsprint relevant to the life of Steven Fenberg--America's top scholar of influential Houston mogul Jesse H. Jones. Though many of the materials concern Jones, the rest explore Fenberg's other philanthropic interests and connections with the wider Houston community, such as his patronage of AIDS Foundation Houston and affiliation with Congregation Emanu El. Additionally family records such as World War II correspondence and family trees have been added through an addendum donated in 2021 and 2023.

This collection reflects the interest Herman E. Detering, III, owner of the Detering Book Gallery, had in photography and psychiatry in the 19th century. A primary focus is on the treatment and study of people experiencing various forms of mental illness. Publications from numerous hospitals, asylums, and other organizations are included. The coverage includes the United States, France, England and other places in Europe.The original materials Detering gathered include 19th century carte de visites, a collection of glass plate negatives from the 1920s, and postcards and other images related to hospitals and asylums. Accompanying the photographs are some realia, such as a magic lantern and a camera and stand, all of which are probably from the late 19th century.
