Hagley Museum and Library - Archival Collections
The Conrail photograph collection consists of an extremely large amount of images from its company files, but the majority of the material comes from its predecessor companies: Pennsylvania Railroad and Penn Central Transportation Company. These items are predominanatly composed of photographs, negatives, transparencies, lantern slides, films; there is one bound report about the Alfred E. Perlman Yard in Selkirk, N.Y. regarding improvements (1966). In addition, there are images of Penn Central, Conrail, Amtrak, Metroliner trains, turbotrains, and commuter trains; passenger trains such as the Airway Limited, Congressional Limited, Manhattan Limited, Merchants Limited, among others; miscellaneous traffic carried on trains (automobiles, coal, mobile homes, perishables, etc.); bridges including the Rockville Bridge, tunnels, and towers; boxcars, including the one millionth freight car built by Pullman Standard in 1979, business cars, cattle cars, clearance cars, "Dewitt Clinton" (train), ...
Hagley Museum and Library - Archival Collections
The archive consists of the corporate records of the Reading Company (1871-1976), the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad Company (1833-1896), the Philadelphia & Reading Railway Company (1896-1923), and 159 predecessors and subsidiaries. Record types include minutes, account books, securities records, reports and agreements. Departmental records are available for the parent company, primarily from the various officers of the Operating Department, the Legal Department, the Secretary and Treasurer. Fragments of presidential correspondence are also available, especially for J.S. Harris and A.A. McLeod. Departmental records contain abundant detail on operating, technical and labor matters, with coverage relatively complete for the 1860-1914 period. Of special interest are papers relating to the Molly Maguires in the 1870s
